This week’s tip comes to you from Steve Marriott of Kaizen Training
In a recent article, Michael Neill introduced me to the work of Dr Laurence Morehouse, former Professor of Physiology at UCLA. In his book “Total Fitness in 30 Minutes a Week”, Morehouse shares this nugget with us.
“Your current level of fitness is at least 80% based on the sum total of your physical activity over the past four weeks.”
Michael further adds...
“So even the most toned athlete can lose 80% of his or her fitness by spending a month in bed”
This raised a question for me:
“How might this be true in business?
How many times have you been ‘surprised’ by another month passing you by?
How would your business be affected if your effort/application over the last four weeks were an indication of ‘match fitness’? What have you done in the last month to keep you and your business on the pace?
Many of us will have experienced feelings of disconnectedness with our business or organisation and will have explained this through various reasons - issues at home, problems in the workplace, other people, lack of motivation and so on. The list goes on, and all very similar to the reasons we use for not exercising. Regardless of the reason, one outcome is constant – a dip in performance and results accompanied by a sense of increased effort to get back in the saddle. Sound familiar?
Well take heart! Just as our athlete could lose 80% fitness, think about this:
“Even the most out of shape amongst us is never more than 4 weeks away from 80% fitness.”
So, applying this to our business metaphor, the great news is none of us are more than a salary cheque away from Match Fitness!
